The Inspectorate ensures compliance with the law and promotes improvements to the management and care of cultural heritage.

When necessary, the Inspectorate takes action in the event of incidents and calamities. The Inspectorate is an independent body which reports its findings objectively. It also advises the Minister of Culture on the quality and effectiveness of the legislation.

Heritage Act

As of 1 July 2016 a new Heritage Act came into force. In the Heritage Act six Dutch cultural laws and one regulation are combined. The most important aim of the Heritage Act is to stop the fragmentation of Dutch cultural heritage legislation and to promote a comprehensive protection regime for cultural heritage, with shared definitions, procedures, and protection measures for immovable, movable and intangible cultural heritage.
